4 overreactions from Texas football’s controversial loss to Alabama
Christian Jones and Kelvin Banks are a revelation for the Texas offensive line
There are a ton of positive things to say about the play of the offensive line in multiple regards coming out of this game. Texas held up much better than originally anticipated in pass protection against those vaunted Alabama pass rushers in Will Anderson Jr. and Dallas Turner.
Two of the most impressive offensive linemen for OL coach/OC Kyle Flood and the Longhorns this weekend were senior offensive tackle Christian Jones and true freshman offensive tackle Kelvin Banks.
For the second straight week, Banks held up well in pass protection and effectively set the edge blocking for the ground game. In fact, Banks only allowed one quarterback pressure and no hits and/or sacks this weekend in pass pro. This is the second straight week where Banks has allowed only a single quarterback pressure.
But the real pleasant surprise at offensive tackle through two games this season is Jones. In his fifth year playing for the Longhorns, Jones is having a real breakout early in the regular season. That has led Jones to post the third-best pass-blocking grade among offensive tackles in the Big 12 through two weeks. That is not something that Jones has pulled off in any season in his collegiate career prior to this year.
It’s also worth noting that the fourth-best pass-blocking grade in the Big 12 belongs to Banks.
In the last two weeks, Jones has posted a pass-blocking efficiency rating of 98.0, which is the best of his collegiate career by a good margin.
So far this season, Jones is showing more fundamental footwork and quicker hands to get a grip on opposing pass-rushers at the point of attack than he put on display in the last few years. Jones is turning into the offensive tackle that many Longhorns fans were hoping he would become a season or two ago.
