Different media outlets are putting together their shortlists to fill the newly vacant head coaching job for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a few of which include current and former Texas football coaches. Some media outlets listed the first-year Texas special assistant to the head coach and former TCU Horned Frogs longtime head coach Gary Patterson as a possible candidate for the Nebraska job.

Another name that is mentioned with Texas ties to the newly opened Nebraska coaching job is the former Longhorns head coach Tom Herman. A piece from Adam Rittenberg of ESPN (exclusive content) tabs Herman as a possible head coaching candidate for the Huskers to fill their new job opening.

This piece from Rittenberg of ESPN also mentions Patterson as a potential head coaching candidate for Nebraska to consider.

But I want to spotlight more on the Herman selection in this list. Since there were a few other major media outlets that included Patterson as a possible coaching candidate, Herman is a more interesting inclusion here.

Rittenberg says that the wildcard that comes with including Herman on the shortlist for the Nebraska job is whether the Huskers administration will actually have any interest in him in the first place.

Nebraska might not want to see the ups and downs that came with the Herman tenure from what we saw during his time at Texas.

Granted, it’s probably worth Nebraska at least vetting Herman given his sustained winning ways at the FBS level. Herman never had a losing season during his roughly half-decade-long tenure as a head coach with Texas and the Houston Cougars.

He finished up with a record of 55-22 (.711 winning percentage) during his six seasons as a head coach with the Longhorns (four years) and Cougars (two years). Herman also holds a postseason record of 5-1 during his time as an FBS head coach.

Moreover, Herman is currently a commentator with CBS Sports for the 2022 college football season. He debuted with the CBS Sports crew for a regular season opener between the North Texas Mean Green and UTEP Miners on Sep. 3.

After being let go from the Texas head coaching job at the outset of the 2021 offseason, Herman also served as an offensive analyst/special projects coach under former head coach Matt Nagy for one season with the Chicago Bears in the NFL.
