Damon Wilson, EDGE

According to a report from Cole Patterson of Rivals/Orangebloods on Sep. 17 (insider content), one of the recruits that Manning is recruiting the hardest this fall is the five-star Venice (FL) edge rusher Damon Wilson. Texas keeps pushing for Wilson since they were surprisingly included in the midst of his five finalist schools a couple of months ago.

Wilson is one of the top priorities among the remaining uncommitted targets of the Longhorns 2023 class at this point of the cycle. If Texas could get a commitment from Wilson, that would completely change the picture of the defensive side of the ball in the 2023 class.

Yet, Texas looks to have an uphill battle ahead with the elite Florida edge rusher Wilson this fall. If a report from Chad Simmons of On3 this week is any indication, Texas is starting to fall behind the rest of the top group of schools in the race to land a commitment from Wilson.

It looks like Texas now has some ground to make up compared to the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Miami Hurricanes, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Georgia Bulldogs.

Wilson already took an official visit to Tuscaloosa to see Alabama over the summer. And he just wrapped up his official visit to Columbus to see Ohio State on the weekend of Sep. 3. It also looks like Georgia and Miami are bound to get official visits in the next couple of months.

To sum this up, it will take a pretty big run from the Longhorns, and some of the key commits in the 2023 class such as Arch, to turn this thing around with Wilson. I’m not too optimistic about Texas’ chances with Wilson from here on out.

But never say never as Texas’ staff is likely going to keep pushing for Wilson right through the whistle on signing day.
