Where Texas football ranks in updated ESPN FPI post-Week 5
Head coach Steve Sarkisian and Texas football got a much-needed win on Oct. 1 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium over head coach Neal Brown and the West Virginia Mountaineers. Texas got this convincing win over West Virginia at home in Week 5 by the final score of 38-20.
This was the biggest margin of victory for Sark and the Longhorns in Big 12 play since the dominant 70-35 win at home last season over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. It also kept the Longhorns from moving their losing streak against West Virginia to two games.
Texas showed a complete team effort in this comfortable 18-point win over the Mountaineers. The defense held the Mountaineers scoreless for the first five drives of the game. And the offense got off to a fast start, by scoring 28 points in the first half. That allowed Texas to take a commanding 28-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.
And with the way that Texas played in the second half, it didn’t really ever feel like they were in danger of a West Virginia comeback in the final 30 minutes.
So, where does Texas sit in some of the more important rankings coming out of the weekend and with Week 5 coming to a close?
Steve Sarkisian and Texas football continues to rank in the top 10 in the ESPN FPI post-Week 5
Texas got some votes in the Coaches Poll this week after not getting any coming out of the loss to Texas Tech last weekend. But the Longhorns didn’t get any votes in the AP Poll for the second straight week.
But the one ranking that continues to hold the Longhorns in high regard this season is the ESPN Football Power Index. The updated version of the ESPN FPI post-Week 5 ranks the Longhorns as the No. 6 team in the country after the win over West Virginia on Oct. 1.
Texas holds steady this week after also being ranked at No. 6 in the FPI post-Week 4 coming out of the overtime loss on the road to Texas Tech.
The updated version of the FPI gives Texas nearly a 40 percent chance to win the Big 12 and a 5.6 percent chance to make it to the College Football Playoff. It also projects Texas’ record this season at 9-4.
Texas holds a record of 3-2 (1-1 Big 12) following the win at home over West Virginia on Oct. 1. Next up for Sark and the Longhorns is the highly anticipated matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Oct. 8, with the kickoff time set for 11 a.m. CT.
