Eric Gray, RB

Among the top running backs for the Sooners this season is the former Tennessee Volunteers transfer and senior standout Eric Gray. Through the first few games of the season, Gray was having the type of campaign that most were expecting out of him in his first year with the Sooners in 2021.

Yet, Gray’s rebound campaign suffered a potential setback last weekend. Gray came up with an apparent injury later on in the loss to TCU. He was knocked out for the game, and his status for Red River is unknown at this point.

Not only did OU see Gray come up with an injury issue last weekend, but redshirt junior running back Marcus Major also came up injured against TCU. Oklahoma’s running back room got really banged up over the weekend.

If it is the case that the Sooners will be without Gray and Major against the Longhorns on Oct. 8, that would mean OU is without two of the three leading rushers for the team so far this season. It would put the onus on freshman running back Jovantae Barnes to shoulder the load on the ground in Red River.

The good news for the Sooners is that Barnes was one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise brutal outing against TCU on Oct. 1. Once Gray and Major were both banged up against TCU, Barnes took the bulk of the reps on the ground, going for 100 rushing yards on 18 carries (5.6 yards per carry), with two rushing scores.
