2 OU commits Texas football could flip with a win in Red River
Jaquaize Pettaway, WR
This would be the longest of the long shots for the Longhorns if they were to try and go after any of the Oklahoma commits in that 2023 class. But there was a point in time when the highly touted four-star Langham Creek wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway was a top priority for the Longhorns 2023 class.
Pettaway was one of the top wideout targets on the board early in the offseason for Sark and new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion. But Pettaway would wind up committing to the Sooners in July.
And it still seems like Pettaway is pretty content with his commitment to Oklahoma.
There are two reasons why I could see the Longhorns still pushing to try and flip the commitment of Pettaway from Oklahoma until the very end. The first is the issues that the Longhorns faced in terms of wide receiver recruiting in the 2023 class of late.
Texas missed out on the four-star Longview wide receiver priority Jalen Hale to the Alabama Crimson Tide a couple of weeks ago. Hale was the top wideout target on the board for the Longhorns 2023 class this fall. Losing him hurt.
But then, Texas got some salt in the wound by seeing the breakout four-star Spring Dekaney wide receiver Jonah Wilson de-commit from the 2023 class over the weekend before the game kicked off against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Oct. 1.
At this point, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Sark, Marion, and the Longhorns at least kick the tires on flippin’ the commitment of Pettaway given the struggles with wide receiver recruiting of late in the 2023 class.
The second reason why I could see Texas pushing for Pettaway this fall is the loss of the former Oklahoma wide receivers coach Cale Gundy. Pettaway had the strongest relationship wth Gundy of any coaches on this Oklahoma staff. But he was obviously let go after a controversial statement a couple of months ago.
Given the strong relationship that Pettaway also has built with Marion, maybe that can be a connecting point if Texas wants to stay in contact with him this fall.
In a world where Texas still tries to reach out to Pettaway this fall, it definitely wouldn’t hurt their chances here by beating Oklahoma this coming weekend.
