2 OU commits Texas football could flip with a win in Red River
Colton Vasek, EDGE
The one at least semi-legitimate shot that Texas has at flipping an Oklahoma commit coming out of Red River this weekend lies with the touted four-star Austin Westlake edge rusher Colton Vasek.
It hurt when the Longhorns lost out on the race to land a commitment from Vasek in early August. In fact, it was pretty abrupt to see Vasek commit to Venables and the Sooners when he did late during the summer months. He committed to Oklahoma following a successful visit to Norman on the final weekend of July.
Yet, Texas definitely has not given up with Vasek this fall. Texas still needs another edge rusher or two at least in the 2023 class before the first signing day. Texas is still going after key edge rusher targets of the 2023 class that committed elsewhere since the summer. Vasek and the four-star Friendswood edge rusher/USC Trojans commit Braylan Shely remain priorities for the Texas staff at the moment.
Texas also hosted Vasek for an unofficial visit during the weekend of the Alabama game on Sep. 10. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Longhorns get Vasek back to campus for another unofficial visit for a game weekend this fall either.
I would imagine that the more times that Vasek visits Texas this fall the better the chances are that the Longhorns are able to flip his commitment. There is also the possibility that Vasek just has a change of heart and winds up wanting to play closer to home.
Back in mid-September, Mike Roach of Horns247 (paid content) placed Vasek on his confidence board with “medium” chances for Texas in the effort to flip his commitment.
It also won’t hurt Texas’ chances in the effort to flip the commitment of Vasek if they are able to get a win over the Sooners this weekend. The defensive struggles that the Sooners showed on the field in the last two games probably aren’t doing much to help their favor in the eyes of Vasek and his camp.
