Texas football vs. OU: 4 bold predictions for an unpredictable Red River
Quinn Ewers returns and throws two picks, but Texas still wins comfortably
We still don’t know yet who the starting quarterback will be for the Longhorns this weekend. Redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers could return to action for the first time since he suffered a clavicle sprain against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sep. 10. But there’s no guarantee that Ewers will be ready to go against OU.
If that is the case, we will see junior quarterback Hudson Card make his fourth consecutive start.
Either way, I would feel pretty good about Texas’ quarterback situation for Red River, especially compared to the current state of OU’s QB room.
It’s worth noting that Sark mentioned in his Monday press conference on Oct. 3 that the Texas QB room is the healthiest it’s been since Week 1. He didn’t specifically say which quarterback he will start, but his rhetoric on the situation had some similarities to what he was saying during fall camp. He said that Texas will essentially go with the QB that gives this team “the best chance to win”.
In my opinion, that means Ewers will start in Red River as long as he’s healthy enough to make it through his throwing motion without too much pain and/or risk of re-injuring that shoulder.
If Ewers is the starter, I would imagine he’ll still have some rust to shake off. And given his tendency to have too much trust in his arm at times, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him have a bad pick or two.
The good news for Texas in this scenario would be that the OU secondary has struggled to a large degree in the last two games. There will be chances to expose this secondary and still take control of this game, even if Texas’ quarterback throws multiple picks.
**Per an update on the afternoon of Oct. 4 from Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods, Ewers is trending in the right direction to make his return vs. OU.
