Texas has the speed and athleticism at the skill positions to beat Iowa State in space

Among the biggest mismatches for Texas this weekend against Iowa State lies at the skill positions. Texas has some skill guys on offense that Iowa State doesn’t have the speed contest in space.

Star sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy and redshirt junior Jordan Whittington will give Iowa State’s DBs issues underneath on short routes and over the top on the deep ball. Texas also can get the tight end duo of sophomore Ja’Tavion Sanders and senior Jahleel Billingsley involved in some 12 personnel sets since the former Alabama transfer is set to make his debut for the Horns this weekend.

Iowa State’s 3-3 stack defense does a nice job of limiting the opportunities in the passing game over the middle. They will also likely devote one of their extra defensive backs to shade Worthy over the top to limit Texas’ deep passing game.

Iowa State has a couple capable safeties and the primary corner, TJ Tampa, is solid in pass coverage. But Texas could likely find more opportunities to exploit the Iowa State secondary underneath and with some quick out routes. Get some rhythm going in the passing game early, and then Texas can test the speed and range of the Iowa State secondary on the deep ball to Worthy.
