As Texas basketball inches closer to their season opener in the Moody Center against UTEP on Nov. 7, we at Hook’Em Headlines will be offering player profiles for everyone on the roster.

Hopes are high entering year two under Chris Beard the regime as this Texas basketball roster is undoubtedly one of the most talented in the country. A mixture of impact freshmen, transfers, and key returners have the Longhorns poised to make some noise on the national stage.

The first player profile we will dive into is one of those key returners, Timmy Allen.

Timmy Allen

After spending his first three years at the University of Utah and earning 2x All-Pac 12 Honors along the way, Timmy Allen decided to transfer to Coach Beard and Texas for his senior season. The reason for this was two-fold: to develop his game for future professional opportunities and to win a national championship.

Although Allen helped lead the Longhorns to their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2015, a Round of 32 exit is not why the former Ute came to Austin.

On April 20th, Allen announced on Instagram he would return to the Forty Acres for his super senior season.

Looking back at 2021/22 for Texas basketball F Timmy Allen

Getting Allen back for the 2022/23 season was major news for Coach Beard and this program. Last season, Allen lead the Longhorns in points per game (12.1) and rebounds per game (6.4). He was second in assists, averaging 2.1 per game.

Standing at 6-foot-6, 200-pounds, Allen’s size makes him the perfect swingman in college basketball. Coach Beard has the option of playing Allen at both the three and four depending on the opposition.

Regardless of position, Beard has shown the desire and trust in Allen to take over some of the lead ball-handling duties. Oftentimes when Allen snags a rebound, you will see him push the pace with the dribble. He is very comfortable in transition and has shown a proclivity to get to the line, where he has hit at nearly a 74-percent clip over his career.

Last season, Allen had a usage rate of 23.6 percent. This is the highest number among returning players on the roster. He has proven to Coach Beard and his teammates that, more often than not, he makes the right decision with the ball in his hands.

Looking ahead to 2022/23

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, it is more than likely that Allen will start at the small forward position for the Longhorns.

In an era of position-less basketball and on a roster that will likely go ten-deep, expect Allen’s on-court role to change possession by possession.

With the likes of Marcus Carr and Tyrese Hunter in the starting lineup and Rowan Brumbaugh and Arterio Morris coming off the bench, this Texas team does not lack ball-handers. Although I expect Allen to continue to push the ball when fast-break opportunities arise, I would be surprised to see him control other primary ball-handling duties.

Where I see Allen’s role growing this season as a secondary creator on the wing and in the high post. By getting the ball to Allen in these spots, you can utilize his two best assets: creation ability and the mid-range jumper.

Allen’s experience and basketball IQ are best utilized in a place where he can scan the defense with multiple options of attack. What he lacks in a consistent outside jump shot he makes up for in the ability to take two hard dribbles and get to the basket.

Allen, who led the team last year in points and rebounds, will be one of the main factors in deciding the ceiling of the 2022/23 Texas Longhorns.

We know he will bring intensity and IQ to the court, but how efficient can he be on the offensive end? Even at a high volume, I believe the fifth-year senior is in a position to have a very efficient and strong offensive season if used correctly.

I highly suspect that each result this upcoming season can be traced back to how well Allen plays.
