Hudson Card, QB

The Longhorns player that a lot of college football fans will be watching next offseason that will be on transfer watch is the former blue-chip recruit and junior quarterback Hudson Card. A piece from Clint Brewster of 247Sports on Oct. 27 even mentioned Card as the first name on the list of potential quarterback transfers to watch heading into the 2023 offseason.

A lot of people were surprised that Card didn’t transfer last offseason after Texas landed a commitment out of the portal from Ewers.

But it wound up being a good thing that Card stuck around for another season on the Forty Acres. He played a critical role for Texas in keeping the game close with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sep. 10. He also led Texas to key wins over UTSA and the West Virginia Mountaineers earlier this season.

In the starts that Card did get this season, he looked better and better as the weeks went by. Prior to the return of Ewers in the Red River Rivalry game on Oct. 8, Card had the best performance of his career to date throwing for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions, against West Virginia at home on Oct. 1.

At this point, I would imagine that Card is going to want to get his degree from the University of Texas and then take his talents elsewhere for a couple of years to prove what he can do as a full-time starter.

Card isn’t going to have an easy path to playing time next year and beyond. He’ll have to fight the likes of the incoming five-star quarterback Arch Manning, freshman Maalik Murphy, and Ewers for quarterback reps in 2023.

Yet, with the level that Card performed at in his starts this season, it shouldn’t be an issue for the third-year quarterback to find a helping of suitors out of the transfer portal.
