Among the top targets early on for the 2024 Texas football recruiting class is the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons.

Co-DCs/LB coaches Pete Kwiatkowski, and Jeff Choate need some playmakers off the edge in the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes, and Simmons might be the most talented of the edge players on the big board for this staff. Simmons is already ranked as a top 10 2024 high school prospect in the nation by at least a couple of the major recruiting services.

The battle on the recruiting trail for Simmons is already very pronounced. There are multiple schools involved that all have at least some shot to land a commitment from Simmons when he’s ready to make a decision.

Moreover, Texas is clearly in the thick of the top group of schools early on in the race to land a commitment from Simmons. Texas is involved with a group of top schools in the recruitment of Simmons that also includes the likes of the LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, TCU Horned Frogs, Georgia Bulldogs, and Alabama Crimson Tide, among others.

It sounds like Texas’ staff is doing a nice job of making Simmons and his camp know how much they want him in the 2024 class. Choate, special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks, and the Longhorns appear to be keeping in consistent communication with Simmons.

According to a report from Cole Patterson of Orangebloods this week (paid content), Texas is staying in “constant contact” with Simmons and even head coach Steve Sarkisian is getting on the phone with him often. Texas is really throwing a lot of resources at the recruitment of Simmons, which makes sense given the impact he could have on this 2024 class.

You don’t hear about the Longhorns putting this much effort and resources into a 2024 recruitment this early on very often in 2022. That goes to show just how important Simmons is among the priorities for the Longhorns 2024 class.

The next steps for Texas in the recruitment of Simmons will continue to be to get him to campus as much as possible in the next few months. Keeping him hanging around the Forty Acres often will keep Texas amid the buzz for Simmons on a consistent basis throughout next offseason.

Simmons has already visited Austin unofficially three times in 2022. He was also in attendance for the Red River Rivalry game on Oct. 8 when the Longhorns catapulted Oklahoma by the final score of 49-0 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

And I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him still making it in one or two more times before the turn of the calendar year.

Texas has a couple of big-time visitor weekends approaching in the next four weeks. Watch out for the possibility of Simmons making it in to see Texas host either the Horned Frogs on Nov. 12 or the Baylor Bears on Nov. 25 at DKR in Austin.

Texas currently holds commitments from three recruits in the 2024 class. All of the three commitments in the Longhorns 2024 class are either a blue-chip cornerback or athlete, highlighted by the highly touted four-star Daingerfield DB/athlete Aeryn Hampton.
