Texas football missed a huge opportunity to get some serious momentum on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class this weekend when it hosted the undefeated and No. 4 ranked TCU Horned Frogs in Austin. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian could’ve put some really nice finishing touches on the 2023 recruiting class roughly one month ahead of signing day had they defeated TCU at home on Nov. 12.

But Sark and the Longhorns ultimately flatlined on offense, leading to a tough loss to the Horned Frogs by the final score of 17-10.

The 10 points that Texas did score in the game came mostly thanks to the defense when junior defensive back Jahdae Barron returned a fumble for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Moreover, the loss to TCU came in front of a few dozen visiting recruits. This had the potential to be one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the entire year for Sark and the Longhorns. Instead, Texas will have to rally on the recruiting trail and on the field to close out this season and this cycle strong.

Key 2023 recruits Texas football could lose to TCU after losing to the Frogs in Week 11

With that in mind, here’s a look at three key Texas recruits that Sark could see them committing to TCU in the near future after the loss to the Frogs in Week 11.

Mikal Harrison-Pilot, ATH

A priority recruit for the Longhorns during the offseason that has faded a bit on the Texas radar on the trail is the versatile four-star Temple athlete Mikal Harrison-Pilot. During the summer, it looked like Harrison-Pilot was one of the top priorities for Texas at wide receiver.

But as summer turned to fall, Texas shifted its priorities in terms of wide receiver recruiting more to the likes of four-star Longview product Jalen Hale and four-star St. John Bosco product/Louisville commit DeAndre Moore Jr.

Nonetheless, MHP is still a recruit worth talking about given some of the top schools that were after him during the offseason.

Throughout much of his recruitment in the last year, both Texas and TCU were major players among MHP’s top schools. TCU and Texas, along with the Cal Golden Bears and Houston Cougars seemed to be clicking with MHP more so than the likes of the Texas A&M Aggies and Oklahoma Sooners, among others.

At this point of his recruitment, I would pick either Houston or TCU as the frontrunner in the race to land a commitment from MHP. With a decision likely coming from MHP ahead of signing day next month, this recruitment will be one to watch for TCU as they look to lock in one of the highest-rated athletes in the 2023 class.
