Texas’ defense is good enough for this team to win out this season

Texas’ defense helped up its end of the bargain against TCU this weekend. Pete Kwiatkowski and Gary Patterson deserve a ton of credit for the game plan, and the players should get a lot of recognition for executing on the field against a high-powered TCU offense in this game.

Texas held a TCU offense that was averaging more than 41 points per game (top eight in the FBS) and roughly 490 total yards of offense per game this season to just 17 points and 283 total yards.

This was a masterful performance from the Longhorns’ defense. Texas was able to limit the effectiveness of the TCU offense by limiting the run game on 95 percent of plays and getting pressure on senior quarterback Max Duggan early and often.

Texas had a season-high five sacks and registered more than a half-dozen tackles for loss.

And if you remove that long 75-yard touchdown run from standout running back Kendre Miller in the second half, TCU’s ground game averaged less than 3.5 yards per carry.

Texas’ defense was fighting the odds for much of this game, having the ball on its side of the field while TCU commanded the time of possession battle. But this unit stood tall and did everything it could to push the Longhorns over the top.

All in all, if the version of the Texas defense we saw in this game against TCU shows up in the next couple of weeks to close out the regular season, we should see this team win out. And if the offense can even come up with some average performances against Kansas and the Baylor Bears to cap the regular season, assuming the defense plays as it did against TCU, there won’t be any excuses for this team to do anything but go undefeated.
