Texas football: 3 key offensive players Steve Sarkisian met with this week
Xavier Worthy, WR
If there was a skill player for the Longhorns that needed to have a big week of practice leading up to the Kansas game on Nov. 19, it was definitely sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy. In the last few weeks, Worthy had some questionable performances.
And it looks as if all chemistry is lost between redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers and Worthy in the intermediate and deep passing game since the Oct. 15 win over the Iowa State Cyclones.
In the last three games, Worthy has a reception percentage of just 32.4. That is the lowest reception percentage over any three-game stretch in Worthy’s collegiate career to date. It is also the lowest reception percentage of any wide receiver in the Big 12 since Week 8.
And while I’m not blaming all the struggles and lack of success in the connection between Ewers and Worthy on the second-year wideout, something has to give from these two to round out the season. It’s as simple as saying that Worthy needs to stop dropping catchable balls and Ewers needs to stop getting tunnel vision when targeting Xavier on the deep ball.
There are plenty of chances that Ewers has to find Worthy in the intermediate and deep passing game. He just needs to be a little bit more patient and trust his fundamental mechanics in the pocket to get off some accurate balls when targeting Worthy.
Last but not least, as far as Sark is concerned, I would like to see more easy passes early in games to get Worthy involved through the air. That would help both Ewers and Worthy get their connection going in the next couple of games against Kansas and the Baylor Bears.
