Dream scenario: Sugar Bowl

Matchup: Big 12 vs. SEC

There is still a chance that the Longhorns could make it to a New Years Six Bowl game this season. It would take a borderline miracle for this to come to fruition. But it can happen.

If Texas were to make it to the Big 12 Championship Game, and then lose to TCU on Dec. 3, this team could be up for a spot in the Sugar Bowl to face one of the better teams from the SEC.

But the most realistic way for the Longhorns to make it to the Sugar Bowl would be for this team to win out, including a Big 12 title win over the Horned Frogs in a couple of weeks.

For Texas to have a shot at a Sugar Bowl berth, it would probably mean beating Baylor in the regular season finale and then TCU in the Big 12 Championship Game. Meanwhile, Kansas State would have to lose to Kansas in Week 13.

In the off-chance that Texas does make it to the Sugar Bowl this postseason, it would probably be matched up against either the LSU Tigers or Alabama Crimson Tide. For Texas to face any team but LSU, that would likely mean that the SEC got two teams into the Playoff with the Tigers winning that conference title game over the Georgia Bulldogs.

The last time that the Longhorns played in the Sugar Bowl was during the 2018 season, in the best year under Herman as the head coach. Texas beat Georgia in a convincing Sugar Bowl win to cap the 2018 campaign. That was also the only double-digit win season in the last dozen campaigns for the Longhorns.
