The player that most Longhorns fans are probably the most thankful for this year is the reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and standout sophomore guard Tyrese Hunter.

Beard and the Longhorns got their biggest addition of the offseason by way of the NCAA Transfer Portal in the form of the former Iowa State Cyclones guard Hunter. This was a huge gift for the Longhorns as Hunter takes this starting unit to a different level this season.

Hunter’s ability to command the floor and create his own looks is making life easier for the rest of the starting unit. Senior guard Marcus Carr can now focus more on his shot selection, ball movement, and perimeter defense this season, which is definitely paying dividends.

Hunter’s playmaking ability is also creating more opportunities for the likes of Mitchell and senior big man Dylan Disu to get more open space to shoot and grab easy boards.

Even the stats that Hunter himself is posting this season is pretty crazy. He’s leading the team this season with 16 points per game. Hunter is also shooting the ball from deep better and playing even better on-ball defense than he did last season.

Hunter is the exact type of player that the Longhorns needed to grab out of the transfer portal last offseason. And he’s delivered on the hype that he brought to the table during the preseason with his contributions early during the 2022-23 campaign.
