Jaylan Ford should be the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

Texas’ defense really showed up in the second half, and it was led by the efforts of the standout linebacker duo of junior Jaylan Ford and senior DeMarvion Overshown. Ford kept making plays for this defense while Overshown had one of his most productive games of the season.

Overshown finished up this one with a game and season-high 14 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, multiple quarterback pressures, and one sack.

Meanwhile, Ford came up big for the Longhorns once again with a momentum-shifting interception in the fourth quarter.

At the time of Ford’s interception, Baylor was down by less than one touchdown. Blake Shapen and the Bears were looking to drive on the Longhorns and re-take the lead.

But Ford had other ideas. He read a pass well between the numbers on a nice coverage stunt called by Pete Kwiatkowski and nabbed his fourth interception of the season.

It seems like Ford is making clutch play after clutch play for the Longhorns during the Big 12 slate. He helped Texas lock in wins over the Kansas State Wildcats, Iowa State Cyclones, and now Baylor.

And the duo of Overshown and Ford were special in this game. They combined for well over two dozen combined tackles, three tackles for loss, a half dozen quarterback pressures, 1.5 sacks, and three pass breakups.

But I have to say that, coming out of this game Ford deserves the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. He’s making a difference for this Texas defense that has helped this team win multiple games over solid Big 12 opposition.
