How Texas football can make it to the 2022 Big 12 Championship Game
Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian are looking to end the regular season on a high note by building a two-game winning streak coming out of this holiday week. No. 23 ranked Texas hosts the unranked Baylor Bears and head coach Dave Aranda at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Black Friday (Nov. 25).
Sark and the Longhorns head into this Nov. 25 regular season finale at home at DKR in Austin with a record of 7-4 (5-3 Big 12). Texas is coming off a dominating win over the Kansas Jayhawks on the road in Lawrence in Week 12, behind the efforts of star junior running back Bijan Robinson who had a career day. Bijan led the Longhorns to a 55-14 decimation of Kansas.
Meanwhile, Baylor comes into Week 13 eliminated from the race for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.
Yet, despite losing three games in Big 12 play already this season, the Longhorns are still eligible for a spot in the conference title game next weekend heading into this Black Friday matchup against Baylor.
So, what is the path for the Longhorns to get a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game to face the No. 4 ranked and undefeated TCU Horned Frogs in Arlington, TX, on Dec. 3?
Texas football’s path to the Big 12 Championship Game
There are two things that must come to fruition in the next couple of days to get Texas into the Big 12 title game.
First, the Longhorns must take care of business at home on Nov. 25 against Baylor. If Texas can beat Baylor, that will put the onus on Kansas on Nov. 26.
Kansas must beat the Kansas State Wildcats in a rivalry game at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, KS, on Nov. 26, with the kickoff time set for 7 p.m. CT.
If Kansas beats Kansas State on the night of Nov. 26, and Texas beats Baylor on Nov. 25, the Longhorns would then own the tiebreaker to be the second team that gets into the Big 12 Championship Game.
This conversation is all for naught, though, if Texas falls short of Baylor on Nov. 25.
TCU has already clinched one of the spots in the Big 12 title game on Dec. 3. Kansas State and Texas remain the only two teams alive for the second spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.
As of the morning of Nov. 25, the ESPN Football Power Index gives Kansas State the best percentage chance to win the Big 12 (46.8), then followed by TCU (45.6), and rounded out by Texas (7.7).
