SMU*

There is an asterisk next to the SMU Mustangs on this list for one major reason. Thamel mentioned in his report on Nov. 29 that Card is looking for a Power Five program that gives him an opportunity to win at his next stop.

If Card is steadfast in seeking out a Power Five program out of the portal in 2023, that would obviously eliminate SMU.

But if Card is still open to the idea of transferring to a Group of Five program if it checks a lot of the other boxes on his list, then SMU is definitely worth considering.

Under head coach Rhett Lashlee, Card would be a pretty ideal fit in that offensive system. SMU likes to run an air raid offense that would let Card open up his game. And he could still use his legs as a weapon when the situation calls for it.

Auburn

While there would be some uncertainties regarding the possibility of Card transferring to join new head coach Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers in the SEC West in 2023, this move still makes some sense. That will depend on who Freeze and the Tigers hire as their new offensive coordinator.

If Auburn goes in the direction of an offensive coordinator that runs a spread and/or air raid offense (or at least one with those concepts built-in), Card could be a nice fit in that system and with that program.

Freeze is likely to bring in the talent necessary to give a quarterback like Card the chance to succeed in the SEC West in the next few years. And it definitely looks like Freeze and the Tigers will be in a position to find a new starting quarterback with some of the struggles that this offense faced on the field in 2022.
