Texas football has a ‘commanding lead’ with 5-Star LB Anthony Hill
The most important remaining target for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class ahead of the Early Signing Period in a few weeks is clearly the elite five-star Denton Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill. Texas has continued to prioritize the recruitment of Hill for the last few months.
Hill’s commitment late in the summer to the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies definitely didn’t phase Texas’ staff in this recruitment. If nothing else, Texas probably worked even harder to convince Hill that the Forty Acres is the right place for him after he committed to Texas A&M in late July.
And those efforts to chip away at Hill’s commitment to the Aggies wound up paying off for the Longhorns last month. On Nov. 7, Hill announced that he would be re-opening his recruitment. And soon after, he had an unofficial visit on the books to see Texas when it hosted the TCU Horned Frogs at home on Nov. 12.
While Texas didn’t win the game on the field against TCU that weekend, the defense did look great. That looked to be enough to leave Hill with a positive impression of the type of defensive unit he could be joining if he ultimately ends up committing to Texas.
Texas football continues to set the pace with 5-Star LB target Anthony Hill
Since that time when Hill visited Austin unofficially, Texas has continued to push for his commitment ahead of signing day later this month.
It looks like Texas is still making progress as it looks to seal the deal with Hill. According to a report from Hudson Standish of Horns247 on Dec. 2 (paid content), all signs are pointing to Texas still having a “commanding lead” among the top schools in the race to land Hill’s commitment ahead of signing day.
And it was good to hear in this report that Texas A&M’s win over the LSU Tigers last weekend didn’t end up moving the needle all that much with Hill.
It’s still worth noting, though, that Texas A&M is one of the top schools as Hill gets closer to a final decision in the next few weeks in all likelihood. It still sounds like Texas and Texas A&M have more traction with Hill at the moment than other big-time programs trying to recruit him through the whistle such as the Oklahoma Sooners and Alabama Crimson Tide.
Texas must still keep pushing to ultimately win this recruitment, though. Texas A&M, Alabama, the Ohio State Buckeyes, etc., won’t let up anytime soon. It would be good to see Texas get Hill back on campus at least one more time before he arrives at a final decision.
Texas A&M is also pushing to get Hill to campus in College Station at some point in the next couple of weeks.
Texas currently holds commitments from 21 recruits in the 2023 class as of Dec. 2. If the Longhorns can land a commitment from Hill as signing day approaches, that would be one of the finishing touches that head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff could put on the 2023 class in the best way possible.
