Don’t expect Texas football to court Bama transfer Tommy Brockermeyer
One of the recent NCAA Transfer Portal entrants that caught the eye of a lot of Texas football fans ahead of the 2023 offseason is the former elite five-star recruit and redshirt freshman offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer. Just a couple of years ago, Texas was heavily pursuing the Brockermeyer brothers on the recruiting trail with the 2021 class.
But the Brockermeyers would ultimately end up picking the Alabama Crimson Tide over the Longhorns, among some other top schools back in the summer of 2020.
It didn’t take very long, though, for the higher-rated of the two Brockermeyer brothers coming out of high school (Tommy) to put his name in the transfer portal. Brockermeyer spent two years playing for the Crimson Tide before entering the portal heading into the upcoming offseason.
And given the past connection that Texas offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood has with Brockermeyer, it makes sense that the Longhorns would be brought up as a possible landing spot for the former elite OT recruit.
Flood was one of the coaches that spearheaded the recruitment of the Brockermeyers for the Crimson Tide in the 2021 class.
It might not wind up being as simple as rejuvenating a past connection for Flood and the Longhorns to land a commitment out of the portal from Brockermeyer, though.
First and foremost, Brockermeyer wasn’t able to make much of an impact on the Alabama offensive line in the last two seasons. He played just 19 offensive snaps over the course of two games this season with the Crimson Tide before entering the portal.
I don’t know how impactful adding Brockermeyer to this group of offensive tackles for the Longhorns would be at this point.
Flood and the Longhorns have done really well recruiting along the offensive line in the last couple of classes. Texas is going to be deep at offensive tackle next year with a lot of young and talented offensive linemen, including freshmen Cam Williams, Kelvin Banks, and Malik Agbo coming back.
Texas football won’t be the likely destination for Alabama transfer OT Tommy Brockermeyer
Texas has landed multiple potent offensive tackle commits in the 2023 class too which will add more skill and depth at the position.
It’s also worth noting that multiple Texas media outlets haven’t pegged Brockermeyer as someone that the Longhorns are chomping at the bit to establish communication.
A report from Jeremy Clark of Horned Frog Blitz on Dec. 6 notes that the TCU Horned Frogs could be a likely destination for Brockermeyer out of the portal. Head coach Sonny Dykes has some relationships formed with Brockermeyer and his camp on the TCU staff.
At the moment, I would favor TCU in the race to land a commitment out of the portal from Brockermeyer over any other destinations that were mentioned in the last couple of days. Texas might kick the tires here, but I don’t think that much will come to fruition here in terms of actual traction between Flood and Brockermeyer out of the portal.
Texas finished up the regular season with a record of 8-4 (6-3 Big 12) following a win at home on Nov. 25 in the finale over the Baylor Bears, by the final score of 38-27. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are now getting to work in the transfer portal and are preparing for the upcoming Alamo Bowl matchup on Dec. 29 against the No. 12 Washington Huskies.
