2 rival programs trying to flip Texas football DL commit Dylan Spencer
TCU
The other in-state school that Spencer visited earlier this fall was the TCU Horned Frogs. TCU is another school that continues to push to get key recruits away from the Longhorns.
It’s worth noting that the Horned Frogs already got one big win over the Longhorns on the recruiting trail among defensive linemen this fall when it landed a commitment from the highly touted four-star Garland Naaman Forest product Markis Deal. Davis and the Longhorns were prioritizing Deal’s recruitment this fall, and it was a hit to the 2023 class to see him commit to TCU.
However, since Spencer already visited TCU unofficially and Davis was seemingly able to keep him focused firmly on the Forty Acres, I don’t know how much of a threat the Horned Frogs will end up being in this recruitment in the next couple of weeks.
While it does seem like TCU is going to keep pushing to flip Spencer’s commitment from Texas in the coming days before the start of the Early Signing Period, it probably isn’t as big of a threat at the moment as Houston.
Davis reportedly was “able to get on the phone” with Spencer after his recent visit to TCU and ensure his commitment to Texas was still firm. And since there are already two blue-chip defensive linemen committed to the Horned Frogs 2023 class, there probably won’t be the same path to immediate playing time that Spencer would have at Houston.
It’s still worth watching to see what the Horned Frogs do in the recruitment of Spencer in the coming days and weeks. TCU does have a good bit of momentum on the recruiting trail right now, so that’s something that can still capture Spencer’s attention. But I would still peg TCU’s chances of flipping Spencer’s commitment from Texas at less than five percent at the moment.
