Predicting Texas football’s next portal loss after P Isaac Pearson
Casey Cain, WR
I’m actually pretty surprised that Texas hasn’t lost more wideouts to the transfer portal since the window opened up on Dec. 5. The lone departure from this receiving corps for passing game coordinator/WR coach Brennan Marion and the Longhorns was redshirt sophomore Troy Omeire.
And to say that it was shocking to see Omeire enter the portal earlier this week is a lie after he spent a few injury-plagued seasons on the Forty Acres.
Yet, I would expect more portal entrants among Texas wide receivers before spring ball comes around next offseason. And one name to watch in this regard is the former three-star recruit and redshirt freshman outside receiver Casey Cain. The 6-foot-3 and 195-pound Louisiana native wide receiver didn’t have the breakout season that many thought he was in for after stepping in the starting lineup coming out of fall camp.
Cain won the starting boundary receiver spot coming out of fall camp after the former Wyoming Cowboys standout receiver transfer Isaiah Neyor suffered an unfortunate season-ending knee injury.
But it looks like Neyor will be back in the lineup for the Longhorns in 2023, thus likely meaning that he will get that starting job back on the outside.
Cain also struggled to find his footing with the offense in Big 12 play this fall. He had some bad drops early during the Big 12 slate and saw his snap count dwindle as the regular season progressed.
After taking more than 20 offensive snaps in each of the first six games of the regular season, Cain didn’t have a single game with that many snaps in the back half of the campaign. And from what we’ve heard regarding Cain’s status with Texas since the regular season finale, it shouldn’t surprise many people if he does end up in the portal in the near future.
