S’Maje Burrell, LB

Potentially the least concerning of the weekend visitors to Houston among Texas commits is the trip that the potent and touted four-star Fort Worth North Crowley linebacker S’Maje Burrell took.

Burrell seems about as locked in as it gets with Texas, at least among recruits that are still taking visits elsewhere. I don’t know if Burrell’s visit to Houston was much more than a weekend trip with some of the other commits to the Longhorns 2023 class that he is close with.

Yet, it’s still worth mentioning that some competing schools on the recruiting trail such as Houston and the Baylor Bears were pretty relentless in this recruitment at times in the last few months. Baylor especially has pushed to flip Burrell’s commitment from Texas since the defensive staff was so openly prioritizing the elite five-star Denton Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill in the last month or so.

If there was one Texas commit on this list that I would peg as having the highest chance of signing with the Longhorns next week, it would be Burrell without a doubt.

It’s never a guarantee that Texas will have anyone 100 percent locked in before they sign on the dotted line on signing day. But Burrell has remained fully engaged with the other commits in this class and the coaches throughout the fall.

It’s hard for me to imagine seeing Burrell explore any other options at this point. He’s still likely going to have the ability to compete for early playing time as soon as next fall, so the idea that Hill could be taking his spot in the Longhorns 2023 class is pretty ludicrous.

The panic meter that I have regarding the flip watch for Niblett is pretty high right now. We will know very soon, though, if Niblett is on the way out or if he decides to stick around. And regardless of what happens with Spencer, I don’t think that will have much of an impact on the final outcome of the Longhorns 2023 class.

Last but not least, I wouldn’t even say a panic meter exists at the moment pertaining to the status of Burrell’s commitment to Texas.
