Among the linebackers that Texas has at least kicked the tires on in the portal heading into the 2023 offseason, the one that sticks out the most is the former Oklahoma State Cowboys All-Big 12 junior Mason Cobb. The breakout third-year linebacker was one of the backbones for the Oklahoma State defense during the regular season.

It was pretty surprising to see his name emerge in the transfer portal following the conclusion of Oklahoma State’s regular season given how integral he was for that defense. But there were rumors circulating that another big-time program was going to try to throw a very lucrative NIL offer Cobb’s way heading into the offseason.

And while I’m not saying that it was the Texas A&M Aggies that threw Cobb an appealing NIL offer to leave Oklahoma State heading into the offseason, there does look to be interest from both parties this month. Cobb already took a visit to College Station to see Texas A&M last weekend.

But it still looks like Cobb isn’t set on a destination yet out of the portal, keeping Texas very much still alive in this recruitment. If Texas does push for Cobb a bit more in the coming weeks, then the portal process could get a lot more interesting in a potential decision between the Longhorns and Aggies.

Moreover, Texas’ decision to pursue Cobb will likely boil down to what happens on the recruiting trail with the elite five-star Denton Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill. If Texas lands a commitment from Hill on his expected decision date (Dec. 21), then it’s a lot less likely that this staff will push too hard for Cobb.
