Jelani McDonald, ATH/LB

Among the bigger surprises coming out of the weekend were the positive returns from the official visit of the touted four-star Waco Connally athlete/linebacker Jelani McDonald to Austin. McDonald wasn’t figured to be a Texas lean heading into the weekend.

In the last few weeks, all we heard about was the momentum that head coach Sonny Dykes and the TCU Horned Frogs had on the recruiting trail with McDonald. It felt like McDonald was trending more and more toward the Horned Frogs heading into signing day.

But that narrative shifted a bit with some buzz going around that TCU doesn’t even have a spot for McDonald in its 2023 recruiting class.

I don’t know how true that rumor is. But this is still something that could wind up benefiting Texas when it’s all said and done for McDonald’s recruitment.

In fact, there is enough momentum for Texas right now in the race to land a commitment from McDonald that there are multiple forecasts projecting his pledge to the Longhorns early this week. Jason Suchomel of Orangebloods and Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas both forecasted McDonald’s commitment to Texas on Dec. 19.

The writing is on the wall that Texas could be the destination for McDonald. But McDonald isn’t going to be someone that will publicly announce his commitment during the Early Signing Period. He is set to announce his commitment during the All-American Bowl on Jan. 7 while signing his National Letter of Intent later this week.
