If things don’t work out for the Longhorns with Carter out of the portal, then a name to watch at the position could be the former New Mexico State Aggies Freshman All-American safety A.J. Haulcy.

At the moment, it looks like Haulcy is one of the best safeties available in the portal. And it sounds like Texas has at least kicked the tires on the idea of pursuing Haulcy’s services out of the portal since he first surfaced on the transfer market on Dec. 9.

But if Texas wants to have a shot at landing a commitment from Haulcy out of the portal, the staff might need to make a move soon. It looks as if Haulcy is coming close to making a decision. He posted on Twitter on the afternoon of Dec. 22 that it is “almost that time”, indicating an announcement could be coming in the near future.

Haulcy did make a recent trip to Oxford to see head coach Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss was one of the first programs that really pushed for Haulcy since he entered the portal a couple of weeks ago. And it looks like Ole Miss is one of the top destinations out of the portal for Haulcy at this moment.

Nonetheless, it wouldn’t surprise me if Texas were to make a late run at Haulcy if things don’t work out in its favor with Carter in the near future. Haulcy looks to be one of the top portal safety targets on the board right now for the Longhorns. He could fit a positional need and offer some long-term value with multiple years of eligibility remaining out of the portal.
