Texas football expected to remain quiet in the portal until 2023

Texas football wasn’t very active in comparison to the rest of the Big 12 to start off this window in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Since the Dec. 5 portal window opened, Texas has only sent out a handful of offers. But the conversion rate was pretty good on those portal offers in the last couple of weeks.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns landed commitments from two of the three portal offers that we know of that were sent out thus far. During the Early National Signing Day (Dec. 21), the Longhorns signed both transfer additions including the former Stanford Cardinal senior punter Ryan Sanborn and Wake Forest Demon Deacons redshirt sophomore cornerback Gavin Holmes.

As far as we know the only remaining portal offer out there to an uncommitted player is to the former Syracuse Orange redshirt sophomore safety Ja’Had Carter. He visited Texas last weekend and looks to be down to the Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes.

But it doesn’t look like we’re going to see much more portal activity before the turn of the calendar year for Texas. According to a report from Bobby Burton of Inside Texas on Dec. 24, the Longhorns aren’t expected to make another portal move for at least another week. It sounds like Texas isn’t expected to have much going on in the portal until after the turn of the calendar year, which is a little more than one week away.

It is worth noting, though, that this report mentions if the right player appears in the portal in the next few days, Texas is still going to reach out. Granted, I don’t know how many players are going to be entering the portal in the next few days. Most of the major portal entrants in this window that aren’t on the transfer market yet will come about after the conclusion of bowl season in a couple of weeks.

All around, we’re probably going to see a pretty quiet period on the recruiting trail for high school prospects and portal players as Sark and the Longhorns prepare for the Alamo Bowl against the Washington Huskies on Dec. 29.

Sark and his staff finished up the Early Signing Period earlier this week with 23 early signees in the 2023 class among high school recruits. There are also the aforementioned two portal signees in the 2023 class, with around a half-dozen more spots likely remaining for transfer pickups.
