Texas Football: Xavier Worthy fuels more speculation amid transfer rumors
There was a lot to digest that came out of the press conferences this week involving various Texas football players and coaches leading up to the Alamo Bowl against the No. 12 Washington Huskies on Dec. 29. Texas had various players and coaches take the stand this week for the bowl press conferences, and there weren’t many more interesting statements than what sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy talked about.
Early in the offense’s press conference on Dec. 27, Worthy was asked about the various transfer rumors surrounding him entering the offseason by Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.
When asked if he is going to return to Texas in 2023, Worthy responded by saying “I’m just focused on the game on Thursday”.
That was all that Worthy had to say on the matter before the press conference moved on to other topics.
Texas football WR Xavier Worthy continues to fuel portal rumors with comments at press conference
It goes without saying that Worthy managed to continue to fuel this debate concerning the possibility of him entering the portal this offseason. He’s definitely drawing out this conversation for a pretty long time.
Eric Nahlin and Bobby Burton of Inside Texas and On Texas Football and YouTube echoed a similar sentiment this week that Worthy is stringing out this conversation for a long time, prolonging the rumors that he could leave the 40 in 2023.
The transfer rumors had calmed down a little bit since Worthy removed Texas-related content from his Instagram page in late November. The whispers were starting to get pretty loud that Worthy could test the waters in the transfer portal around the conclusion of the regular season last month.
But it looked like head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff were able to do enough to convince Worthy to possibly stick around in 2023 entering the postseason.
Moreover, this isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about transfer rumors for Worthy. Last offseason, Worthy was rumored to be getting a lot of interest to enter the transfer portal by way of some big-time NIL offers.
Texas managed to convince Worthy to stick around last offseason. But it seems like Texas will have to continue to fight to keep him around for a third year on the Forty Acres in the weeks immediately following the conclusion of the Alamo Bowl.
All in all, we don’t have a definitive word about Worthy’s current status with the Longhorns. But it is clearly significant that Worthy is still fueling this speculation so close to the official start of the offseason for the Longhorns.
We will continue to monitor the transfer situation concerning Worthy as we enter the offseason in a couple of days.
Texas heads into the Alamo Bowl with a record of 8-4 (6-3 Big 12) following a 38-27 win in the regular season finale at home on Nov. 25 over the Baylor Bears. The kickoff time between Texas and Washington in the Alamo Bowl is set for 8 p.m. CT at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Dec. 29.
