Charles Wright, QB

Texas did already lose two quarterbacks from this year’s squad to the transfer portal in the last month or so. Junior quarterback Hudson Card entered the portal last month as a graduate transfer and ultimately committed to new head coach Ryan Walters and the Purdue Boilermakers.

The other quarterback who transferred as part of the 2023 portal class from the Longhorns is the former preferred walk-on Ben Ballard. The Texas native Ballard ultimately chose to join the head coach that he originally played for with the Longhorns, teaming up with new bench boss Tom Herman and the Florida Atlantic Owls.

I don’t believe that the attrition in the quarterback room is done quite yet after Texas lost the likes of Ballard and Card to the portal. Another name to watch here is a fellow former Herman recruit and ex-Iowa State Cyclones commit Charles Wright. The former three-star Austin High quarterback recruit could wind up getting lost in this room next year with all the talent that will be in the mix.

Sark and the Longhorns will have a clear-cut top-three building for the future in the quarterback room in 2023. That top three will be made up of Ewers, freshman Maalik Murphy, and incoming freshman Arch Manning.

And while Wright did get some live-game reps in the last two seasons, I don’t think he would be in line to get any next season.

The combination of the fact that Wright wasn’t originally recruited by Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee along with the prospect of him getting buried in the QB room next season could be enough for him to want to explore other options in the portal.
