Among the portal players currently available as of the evening of Jan. 1, 2023, the one that Texas was after for the longest time now is the former Syracuse Orange redshirt sophomore safety Ja’Had Carter. Texas hosted Carter for a bit of a surprise visit to Austin a couple of weeks ago.

Despite the official visit that Carter made to Austin to see the Longhorns going well a couple of weeks ago, Texas wasn’t able to close on a commitment from the standout defensive back that same weekend.

We also haven’t heard many updates regarding the recruitment of Carter out of the portal in the last week or so. What we do know is that Carter is largely considering Texas and the Ohio State Buckeyes among his top schools out of the portal at the moment.

It sounds like some other schools such as the Tennessee Volunteers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Florida State Seminoles could also be working into the conversation among the schools that Carter is considering out of the portal.

A report from Billy Kurelic of 247Sports on Jan. 1 (paid content) indicates that a decision could be coming soon from Carter, though. He didn’t name a top school in this report, but Texas and Ohio State were the first two teams mentioned.

Texas does sound like it’s still very much in the running to land a commitment out of the portal from Carter when he arrives at a final decision later this month. And it looks like the defensive staff is still pushing hard for Carter since his visit to the Forty Acres wrapped up a couple of weekends ago.
