After some reports earlier in the day on Jan. 4 were indicating that true freshman Texas football running back Jaydon Blue was expected to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, the Houston native took to social media to shoot down the buzz. On the afternoon of Jan. 4, there were some indications that emerged that Blue would not be testing the waters in the transfer portal this offseason.

He would later post to his Instagram page that he will not be transferring, officially shooting down any portal discussion surrounding him this week.

It’s also worth noting that Blue has restored some of the Texas-related content on social media on the afternoon of Jan. 4. Last week, he scrubbed all Texas-related content from his Instagram page.

This all came after Blue didn’t get a single rushing attempt in Texas’ loss to the No. 12 ranked Washington Huskies in the Alamo Bowl on Dec .29. Blue originally looked like he would be part of the running back rotation in the Alamo Bowl upon junior All-American RB Bijan Robinson and senior Roschon Johnson opting out of the postseason.

Getting Blue back for the 2023 campaign is a big win for Texas’ running back room. If Blue had transferred out, Texas would be down to four scholarship running backs in 2023 upon the arrival of three-star DeSoto product Tre Wisner and five-star Orlando Edgewater (FL) product Cedric Baxter Jr. with the 2023 signing class.

Blue will return as the third-most productive running back for the Longhorns in 2023, assuming head coach Steve Sarkisian and running backs coach Tashard Choice don’t try to find another option at the position in the portal this offseason.

During the 2022 season, Blue took live-game reps in three games, with the first coming in the opener on Sep. 3 against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. Over the course of those three games, Blue took 15 rushing attempts for 33 yards and no rushing scores.

Texas finished up the 2022 season with a record of 8-5 (6-3 Big 12) following the 27-20 loss in the Alamo Bowl to Washington on Dec. 29. Blue and the Longhorns will have a lot of work to do in the RB room to replace what will be lost with Roschon and Bijan departing for the 2023 NFL Draft.
