Texas Football: Predicting the Longhorns next transfer loss
Xavier Worthy, WR
The elephant in the room still for the Longhorns in terms of the possible noteworthy transfer portal entrants has to do with sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Texas is still waiting to hear the final word from Worthy regarding whether he will stick around on the Forty Acres for another season.
Worthy kept the speculation going prior to the Alamo Bowl that he could still put his name into the portal this offseason. It still sounds like Worthy is exploring all options available to him, if a recent report from Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas tells us anything.
Another indication that Texas could still be anticipating the possibility of Worthy entering the portal this offseason has to do with the increased activity in terms of scouting out the wide receiver position on the transfer market. Texas now seems to be set on the idea of at least bringing in one or two wideouts via the portal as part of the 2023 class.
Combine all of these factors, and it’s pretty easy to see how the transfer rumors surrounding Worthy are very much alive roughly one week following the conclusion of the Alamo Bowl.
And even if Worthy doesn’t test the waters in the portal this offseason, I would assume that if Worthy does stick around for another season, the 2023 campaign would be his last in college. Worthy seems destined to try to reach the NFL as fast as possible, despite his inconsistencies on the field with the Longhorns during the 2022 season.
Despite some of the struggles he faced on the field during the season, Worthy would still be valuable if he returns to Texas in 2023. He is one of the most versatile and potent skill weapons in this offense.
And he is also one of the most productive. According to Sports Reference, Worthy tied redshirt junior wide receiver Jordan Whittington and sophomore tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders for the most games with at least 50 receiving yards on the season for the Longhorns, with seven.
