Trey Owens, QB

The hot quarterback target at the moment for the Longhorns 2024 class is the rising three-star 6-foot-4 and 195-pound Cy-Fair signal caller Trey Owens. Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee has made it clear that they want Owens in the 2024 class, which is rare for this cycle at the quarterback position thus far.

In fact, Owens is the only in-state quarterback that Sark, Milwee, and the Longhorns have offered in the 2024 class at the moment. And considering how the other three quarterback offers for the Longhorns are five-star recruits, it’s pretty clear that Owens is someone that this staff believes in, despite his three-star label.

Texas has already hosted Owens for nearly a half-dozen visits since the fall of 2021. And he’s set to be on campus for Junior Day later this month. While there’s no certainty of this coming to fruition, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Texas make another big move with Owens coming out of Junior Day in a couple of weeks.

But what would Owens bring to the table for the Longhorns 2024 class?

Owens has a big arm and is quickly showing that he can make a lot of the throws necessary to fit in Sark’s offense. He’s already got a nice touch on the intermediate and deep throws and some pretty impressive pocket awareness for a high school junior.

However, the fact of the matter is that the Longhorns aren’t really looking for a long-term face of the program at the quarterback position in the 2024 class. Texas is planning to have the former elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback commit Arch Manning take over the reins for this offense starting in 2024, which would probably at least carry through 2026.

The quarterback that is ultimately committed to the 2024 class will probably play a role more similar to that of freshman Maalik Murphy. That essentially means that Owens would be the long-term developmental quarterback that could round out this QB room for Sark and the Longhorns a couple of years down the line.
