A Texas offer in the 2023 class that once had some buzz with the Longhorns is the touted and versatile four-star Temple (TX) athlete/wide receiver Mikal Harrison-Pilot.

Texas looked to be really high on MHP last summer as one of the top wide receiver targets in the 2023 class. In fact, there was a point in time last offseason when it looked as if Texas was making the biggest move over the likes of the Cal Golden Bears, Houston Cougars, and TCU among the top schools for MHP.

But the communication between Texas and MHP seemingly fell off entering the fall. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator seemingly identified other priority targets at the position. Texas started to prioritize the likes of the highly touted four-star St. John Bosco (CA) wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. and four-star Longview product/Alabama Crimson Tide commit Jalen Hale heading into the fall last offseason.

In the last few months, the schools that wound up making the biggest move in the race to land a commitment from MHP are Houston and TCU. Houston made a big impression on MHP during the fall, which was capped by a successful official visit to campus on the weekend of Dec. 16. The Cougars getting the final word among the in-person visits for MHP could be the difference-maker in this recruitment when it’s all said and done.

And heading into the All-American Bowl, the overwhelming favorite looks to be head coach Dana Holgorsen and the Cougars.

TCU does still look to have an outside shot with MHP. But I’d put the odds that Houston is able to haul in a commitment from MHP on Jan. 7 at least at 95 percent.

Likely destination: Houston
