Damion Baugh slices up Texas for 10 assists

Teams that have a true floor general that can command the floor and distribute it effectively are something that has given Texas some troubles lately.

That was especially the case in the loss to Kansas State and the tough overtime win over the Rice Owls last month. Kansas State point guard Markquis Nowell had an insane night offensively against the Longhorns, posting a career-high 36 points and nine assists, with just one turnover.

Rice big man Max Fiedler and guard Quincy Olivari also carved up Texas for a combined 11 assists when the Longhorns were nearly upset in overtime at home on Dec. 12.

Kansas State and Rice are two of the worst defensive performances we’ve seen from the Longhorns so far this season. And the commonality between both of those games was the fact that those were the two teams that Texas allowed the most team assists against.

Senior TCU guard Damion Baugh is a factor that worries me a little bit with Texas matching up against a good Frogs team on Jan. 11. Baugh ranks in the top five in the Big 12 in assists per game this season, at a mark of exactly five. He also ranks in the top five in the Big 12 in assist percentage.

According to Sports Reference, Baugh is one of just four Big 12 guards that has registered an assist percentage of at least 27.0 in conference play while getting more than 100 minutes on the floor so far this season.

Baugh has continued to command the TCU offense effectively this season. He excels as the primary facilitator in this offense, mostly getting his assists off of drive and kick and pick-and-pop plays.

Texas must be mindful of its off-ball defense and communication in this game, or else Baugh will be able to pick them apart on some backdoor screens and pick-and-pop plays to get some open catch-and-shoot opportunities for his teammates.
