It is now that time of the year to take a way-too-early look ahead to the 2023 season for head coach Steve Sarkisian and Texas football. With the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs beating up on the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Jan. 9, to the tune of a 65-7 romping at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the way-too-early projections for the 2023 season are already pouring in.

And it looks like some of the early hype is already starting to build for Sark and the Longhorns heading into the official start of college football’s 2023 offseason. The hype that the Longhorns could potentially have to head into the 2023 season is already evident given the opening 2023 National Championship odds.

In the opening National Championship odds for the 2023 season from Caesers Sportsbook (included in a write-up from 247Sports on Jan. 10), Texas ranked among the 10 teams with the best shot at winning the title. Texas tied the Clemson Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (at +1800 odds) at No. 7 for the best chances to win the title next season.

The top six were rounded out in the following order.

  1. Georgia (+375)
  2. Alabama (+550)
  3. Ohio State (+650)
  4. USC (+1000)
  5. Tie between LSU and Michigan (+1400)

It’s worth noting that Texas was the only Big 12 school that cracked the top 10 in this opening set of odds for the 2023 National Championship. But we’re likely to see others including the likes of the Kansas State Wildcats, TCU, and possibly the Oklahoma Sooners among the 20 or 25 teams with the best odds to win the title next year.

And as many other publications have done in the last 12 hours or so amid the wave of way-too-early projections for the 2023 season, 247Sports mentioned what Texas brings in at quarterback for the upcoming campaign. This write-up talked about how Arch Manning could “press” rising redshirt sophomore Quinn Ewers for reps at the quarterback position in 2023.

While I don’t think that will necessarily be true during spring and fall camp this offseason, it’s hard to ignore all the headlines surrounding Arch’s arrival on campus this semester.

Texas finished up the 2022 season with a record of 8-5 (6-3 Big 12) following a 27-20 loss at the hands of the No. 12 Washington Huskies in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. Sark and the Longhorns head into the offseason with the No. 25 ranking in the final AP Poll.
