Texas Football: 3 WR coach candidates that Sarkisian has interest in
Holmon Wiggins, Alabama WR coach
If I had to name an odds-on favorite to be Texas’ next wide receivers coach to replace Marion at this moment, it would go to the Alabama Crimson Tide fourth-year WR coach Holmon Wiggins. It sounds like Sark had the most meaningful contact with Wiggins of any of the possible candidates to fill this job opening for the Longhorns in the last week or so.
Sark also has the most connections with Wiggins of any of the potential coaching candidates I’ve mentioned on this list. Wiggins and Sark were on staff together for two seasons under head coach Nick Saban at Alabama in 2019 and 2020.
And multiple of the coaches currently on Sark’s staff at Texas (i.e. Kyle Flood and Jeff Banks) were at Alabama in those two years.
In the last few years, Wiggins is widely regarded as one of the better wide receivers coaches in the entire country. He is also one of the best recruiters of all the wide receivers coaches in the Power Five.
Granted, recruiting to Alabama can often sell itself. He would be put to the test in a more significant way as Texas’ wide receivers coach as a leading recruiter than he is at Alabama with most of the targets he pursues on the trail.
It’s worth mentioning that Wiggins was reportedly one of the top candidates to join Sark’s staff when the former Broyles Award winner was first assembling his staff at Texas early in the 2021 offseason. But Saban was able to get Wiggins to stick around at Alabama, leading Sark to retain Coleman at the time.
Maybe this connection between Wiggins and Sark could be something that actually comes to fruition in terms of coaching hire this offseason.
