Texas Basketball: 2 studs, 1 dud from persistent win over Texas Tech
Dud No. 1: Dylan Disu, C
The most disappointing performance for the Longhorns in this game, by a good margin, came courtesy of senior big man Dylan Disu. The 6-foot-9 and 220-pound center didn’t make much of an impact on this game on either end of the floor for the Longhorns, outside of one major area.
In fact, this was the first scoreless game of the season for Disu. And that’s pretty crazy considering how he played 19 minutes and was in the starting lineup on this night.
The one area where Disu did make an impact on this game was protecting the rim. Disu put up a game-high four blocks, making it tough for Texas Tech to finish around the rim when he was manning the paint.
While the blocks were good to see from Disu in this game, he didn’t do much elsewhere. He went 0-of-1 shooting from the field (which was an attempt from beyond the arc) while coming up with two rebounds, no assists, two turnovers, and the aforementioned four blocks.
Granted, I don’t necessarily blame Disu for fading from relevancy in this game down the stretch. I don’t think he was utilized in the best of ways against Texas Tech. He missed only one shot from beyond the arc and the Longhorns essentially took his role out of the game on the offensive game after that.
Meanwhile, an ice-cold Tyrese Hunter still got three attempts from deep. And senior forward Timmy Allen even had a couple of looks from beyond the arc.
Disu is a more capable three-point shooter than what he’s been given the chance to put on display for Texas in the last couple of years (averaging just 0.8 attempts from three-point range per game with the Longhorns). I would like to see Terry to give Disu more looks from deep instead of less natural floor-spacing forwards/big men such as Allen and fellow senior Christian Bishop.
