MJ Sherman, EDGE

The most realistic option for the Longhorns among the Georgia players in the portal this offseason is the former elite five-star recruit and junior edge rusher MJ Sherman. While Sherman didn’t live up to the hype in the last few years in Athens, a change of scenery seems warranted for the former blue-chip product out of St. John’s in Washington D.C.

He was mostly utilized as a reserve edge rusher for Georgia in his three years with the program.

The 6-foot-3 and 250-pound Sherman didn’t get a lot of run at Georgia in the last couple of years. But he was able to make at least a little bit of an impact here and there on Georgia’s pass rush since late in the 2021 campaign.

Sherman started to get a few more snaps as a pass rusher in the last 15 or 20 games. Since Week 10 of the 2021 regular season, Sherman got around four dozen pass rush snaps for the Georgia defensive front, where he registered seven quarterback pressures and 0.5 sacks.

Moreover, if Texas were to kick the tires on the possibility of adding Sherman out of the portal, it would be with the ultimate goal for him to compete for reps and solidify a spot on the two-deep coming out of camp. He isn’t in a spot to be considered an immediate impact starter for this defensive front for the Longhorns.

But I do still believe there is a lot of untapped talent left in the tank for Sherman. He has multiple years of eligibility remaining and he definitely looks the part of a standout jack player for the Longhorns.

And considering the lack of edge rusher depth in the portal at the moment, Sherman appears to be one of the best options among those coming from the Power Five ranks.
