One of the early candidates that were mentioned in connection with the wide receivers coach job for Texas football following the departure of Brennan Marion a little more than one week ago was the Alabama Crimson Tide fourth-year WR coach Holmon Wiggins. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian looked to have some real interest in pursuing Wiggins as a candidate to fill this opening on his staff as recently as just a few days ago.

It now appears that Wiggins might not be one of the serious candidates in the running for the wide receivers coach job for the Longhorns. According to a report from Horns247 on Jan. 16 (paid content), Wiggins is likely to stay at Alabama despite the interest from Sark and the Longhorns.

Last week, it did appear as if there were some meaningful discussions being had between Sark and Wiggins. The Alabama WR coach was even once under consideration to join Sark as the wide receivers coach at Texas when he first took the head coaching job in early 2021.

At this point, I believe there is enough evidence out there supporting the idea that Wiggins isn’t really in the running for this position on Sark’s staff any longer. I do think that if Wiggins was still interested in the job, we would’ve heard a lot more about ongoing conversations between him and Sark. If that had taken place, Wiggins might already be named Texas’ new WR coach.

It was initially reported that Sark ideally wanted to have a wide receivers coach named at least by the middle of the week before Junior Day. If that were to come to fruition, we would theoretically have a hire at WR coach announced in the next couple of days.

Moreover, some of the hot names among the candidates for this position on Sark’s staff coming out of the weekend are the Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers coach Chris Jackson, Washington State Cougars wide receivers coach Joel Filani, and Arizona State Sun Devils wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator Ra’Shaad Samples.

It seems like most of the buzz at the moment in terms of the top candidates to be the next Texas wide receivers coach is Jackson. Multiple reports in the last 18-24 hours have indicated that Jackson is the likely favorite based on the latest intel.
