There’s a lot of smoke right now concerning the possibility of Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian being able to nab the Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wide receiver Adonai Mitchell if he does enter the NCAA Transfer Portal in the next 24 hours or so. Multiple reports are indicating that there is a real connection between Mitchell and Texas upon the closing of the transfer portal window this week.

A lot of this started with various reports from Dawgs247 that Texas would be a possible destination for Mitchell if he were to enter the portal this offseason. And the latest update from Rusty Mansell of Dawgs247 on the night of Jan. 17 (paid content) didn’t guarantee that he would be entering the portal this week.

But this report did mention that “there seems to be a lot of smoke in the last 24 hours” regarding the Mitchell portal rumors. There is a similar sentiment echoed from Dawgs247’s partner site in the 247Sports network, Horns247.

Another report that gave some insight into the situation regarding Mitchell and the transfer portal this week came from CJ Vogel of TFB Texas on Jan. 18 (donor content). Vogel noted that “we have heard that if an entry happens, Texas would be interested and be the likely destination”.

There are a few other outlets reporting something similar to that of these two 247Sports sites and The Football Braniacs.

It certainly appears that Mitchell was one of the wideouts rumored to be possibly testing the waters in the portal that Sark and the Longhorns were waiting all this time for. And if he does enter the portal, it sounds like Texas and the USC Trojans are two of the likely destinations to watch.

Something else of note on Mitchell is that he followed Texas starting quarterback Quinn Ewers on Instagram this week. And while this is mostly built around speculation, if Mitchell were to theoretically transfer to Texas in the near future, establishing this connection with Ewers would obviously make a lot of sense for the Georgia wideout.

Texas football looks like a viable destination if UGA WR Adonai Mitchell enters the portal this week

Moreover, the 6-foot-4 and 190-pound Mitchell is a Houston-area native. He started out in high school football playing in Texas at Fort Bend Austin, before moving to Tennessee to play for Antioch Cane Ridge (TN) for his last two years.

Texas also offered Mitchell out of high school. Granted, that offer didn’t come from the current coaching staff, since he received it in 2020.

It sounds like getting closer to home would appeal to Mitchell, which could be one of the reasons why there are multiple reports connecting him to the Longhorns early this offseason.

We will continue to follow this emerging storyline as the portal window deadline approaches this week. It is believed that if a player wants to enter the transfer portal prior to the start of spring ball, they must file the paperwork to do so before the end of the day on Jan. 18.

It’s worth noting that just because a player files their paperwork to enter the transfer market on Jan. 18, that doesn’t mean they will be visible in the portal right away. There can still be a lag between the time of submission of the paperwork and when the player’s name actually shows up in the portal.

If Mitchell does decide to officially enter the portal this week, that would obviously give the Longhorns an opportunity to add a real potent talent at a position of need this offseason. Mitchell would give the Longhorns some assurance that the depth at boundary receiver is solid ahead of spring ball.
