Texas Football: 3 big transfer targets upon portal window closing
Adonai Mitchell, WR
The clear-cut top portal target for the Longhorns upon the window closing this week is the former Georgia Bulldogs 6-foot-4 and 190-pound sophomore wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. The Houston-area native and former four-star recruit is someone that was immediately mentioned as a top Texas target as soon as the reports came out that he submitted his paperwork to enter the portal on Jan. 18.
And roughly 24 hours after his name showed up in the transfer portal this week, Mitchell made it to the Forty Acres for a visit.
It was initially anticipated that Mitchell would be visiting Texas within the week after his name showed up in the portal on Jan. 18. But this was sooner than we expected this to come to fruition, which is obviously a good sign if you’re Texas.
Mitchell is exactly what Sark and the Longhorns are looking for out of a boundary wide receiver to bring in alongside Neyor this offseason. And it looks like Texas is likely the favorite destination if one had to be named at the moment for Mitchell since he surfaced in the portal on Jan. 18.
Another possible destination that was mentioned in connection with Mitchell prior to entering the portal this week was USC. But it looks like Texas has the edge over USC at the moment given the proximity to home for Mitchell and the early visit to Austin on Jan. 19.
The focus for the Longhorns right now should fully be on getting a commitment from Mitchell. He is definitely the highest-priority portal target for this coaching staff. Landing him would put the wide receiver room in a spot where, if Sark didn’t take another portal player, that wouldn’t be a detriment heading into next season.
