Predicting Texas football’s next transfer addition after AD Mitchell
Dae Dae Hunter, RB
After landing Mitchell, the running back position might be the most pronounced need that Sark and his staff will have to address in the portal for the remainder of the offseason.
Upon the departures of star junior running back Bijan Robinson and the established senior leader Roschon Johnson, Texas’ running back room will be put to the test in 2023. And I don’t know how confident Sark and running backs coach Tashard Choice will be relying on a true freshman in Cedric Baxter Jr. along with rising redshirt sophomore Jonathon Brooks as the candidates to be the every down back in 2023.
Sark and Choice might want to bring in a more experienced and proven option at the position out of the portal if they don’t like what they have with their current personnel coming out of spring ball.
And one portal running back to watch that remains uncommitted as of the afternoon of Jan. 21 is the former Liberty Flames and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors junior Dae Dae Hunter. The 5-foot-10 and 205-pound Hunter had a fantastic run in his one season playing for the Flames.
Hunter picked up just over 1,000 total yards from scrimmage and nine total touchdowns on 147 touches at Liberty during the 2022 season. He was also the highest-graded running back among the seven FBS Independent schools last season.
What Hunter brings to the table is a hard-nosed and shifty back that has the ability to run between the tackles or bounce outside to get in space and make some opposing tacklers miss for chunk plays. Hunter is elusive in the open field, as he led the FBS Independent schools with 50 missed tackles forced and 4.4 yards after contact per carry.
If Texas is still seeking out running back help in the portal following the conclusion of spring ball, and Hunter is available at the time, I think this fit would make a lot of sense.
