Texas Football: Projecting the 2023 WR depth chart with AD Mitchell
Z-wide receiver/boundary
Starter: AD Mitchell OR Isaiah Neyor
Backup: Casey Cain
The most potent of the wide receiver spots for Sark and the Longhorns after the addition of Mitchell via the transfer portal will definitely be on the boundary. With Mitchell now in the mix alongside Neyor, the sky really is the limit in terms of what Texas can do in the passing game to the boundary.
It’s also big for the Longhorns to be able to get a commitment from Mitchell before the start of spring ball. Considering how he should be enrolled within the next few days, Mitchell will be able to get ingratiated with his teammates and coaches.
As Neyor is still recovering from the unfortunate knee injury he suffered last fall, Mitchell can get the starting reps at boundary receiver in spring ball. And then, we’re probably going to see both Mitchell and Neyor compete for the starting job heading into fall camp this year.
It’s also worth noting that Texas has a reliable player returning at boundary receiver behind Mitchell and Neyor on the projected wideout depth chart in rising redshirt sophomore Casey Cain.
The most notable differences between what Texas has in Neyor and Mitchell I think mostly has to do with scheme versatility. Neyor is more of a true boundary receiver that can be a potent deep ball threat while being able to go up and get those tough contested 50/50 balls at a high rate. While Mitchell is a deep threat and is good at bringing down those contested balls, he is also able to work between the numbers and in the short and intermediate passing game.
We’re probably going to see a lot of plays that Sark has both Mitchell and Neyor on the field in the passing game in 2023.
