Texas did take a depth hit at the cornerback position entering this offseason upon the decision of sophomore Jamier Johnson to enter the transfer portal more than one month ago.

Johnson entered the 2022 campaign as a cornerback that had solidified a spot on the two-deep depth chart. He was essentially the third or fourth cornerback in the pecking order at the position heading into the 2022 season behind the starting duo of senior field corner D’Shawn Jamison and redshirt sophomore boundary corner Ryan Watts.

As the season progressed, though, Johnson started to get passed up on the depth chart by younger corners such as true freshmen Austin Jordan and Terrance Brooks. Johnson went from getting well over 20 defensive snaps in each of the first five games of the season to only playing a combined 14 defensive snaps in the entire back half of the campaign.

That left little wonder as to why Johnson wanted to enter the portal following the conclusion of the regular season.

Nonetheless, I still expected Johnson to be one of the four or five corners in the mix to be on the two-deep entering the 2023 offseason.

Texas was able to replace the depth lost by Johnson entering the portal when it landed a commitment from the former Wake Forest Demon Deacons redshirt sophomore cornerback Gavin Holmes.

Meanwhile, Johnson committed to play for the Indiana Hoosiers out of the portal last month. Johnson signed with the Hoosiers during the Early Signing Period last month and will look to make an immediate impact at least as a rotational player at the position in the Big Ten in 2023.
