Texas Football: Where the 4 biggest transfer losses landed this offseason
Hudson Card, QB
Destination: Purdue
The biggest name among the Longhorns players that wound up in the transfer portal so far this offseason is junior quarterback Hudson Card. After performing at a very admirable level for the Longhorns upon the shoulder injury to redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers early in the regular season, Card was a very highly rated signal caller in the portal in the 2023 class.
It looked like Card was getting plenty of interest from some top schools that had needs at the quarterback position out of the portal early in this cycle. He ultimately wound up choosing to play for new head coach Ryan Walters, former West Virginia Mountaineers offensive coordinator Graham Harrell and the reigning Big Ten West Champion Purdue Boilermakers.
Card will have at least a couple of years of eligibility remaining as he takes his talents to West Lafayette to presumably be Purdue’s next starting quarterback. And if he performs at a level anywhere close to what he did for the Longhorns in 2022, Purdue is getting a good one next fall.
Meanwhile, the backup job at Texas is likely going to be a competition that takes place between second-year quarterback Maalik Murphy and the incoming freshman five-star recruit Arch Manning. It’s worth noting that Murphy was the backup in the Alamo Bowl for Texas as Card had already entered the portal after the regular season finale.
