Big news arrived on the recruiting trail for the Texas football program on Jan. 25. Texas is now set to host a key blue-chip 2023 recruit that is currently committed to a Big 12 foe. The highly touted four-star Red Oak (TX) safety and TCU Horned Frogs pledge Warren Roberson is apparently taking an official visit to Texas this weekend.

The news of Roberson getting on the books for an official visit to Austin in the next few days came from Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas on Jan. 25 (paid content). Texas also reportedly made an in-home visit with Roberson this week.

This coming weekend is the last for 2023 recruits to take visits before the traditional National Signing Day (A.K.A. now the late signing period).

Texas now looks to be getting in the mix once again for Roberson, who is the lone unsigned high school commit in the Horned Frogs’ 2023 class at the moment. Roberson had a lot of interest coming from the Longhorns during the fall, which is when he initially received a Texas offer.

But Texas seemed to be falling behind with Roberson late in September and throughout October, before he eventually gave his pledge to the Horned Frogs on Oct. 31.

Roberson had a tight relationship with the now-former TCU recruiting coordinator/offensive analyst Bryan Carrington. The former TCU and Texas staffer was recently hired by new head coach Kenny Dillingham with the Arizona State Sun Devils, though.

Carrington leaving TCU for Arizona State kept Roberson’s recruitment open past the Early Signing Period last month as he’s received interest from a few other notable schools. Other schools such as Arizona State and the USC Trojans have continued to make this recruitment interesting ahead of the late signing period.

Roberson made the trip to LA to see USC last weekend. That was Roberson’s second trip to USC since he made an official visit last summer.

At the moment, it looks like USC is a real contender in the race to flip Roberson’s commitment and sign him next week.

But Texas is now working to insert itself into the conversation surrounding Roberson’s recruitment upon the news of him taking the official visit to Austin this weekend. That is a huge shakeup in this recruitment given that Texas could get the final word among the in-person visits for Roberson before he signs on the dotted line on Feb. 1.

Another factor that could potentially work in Texas’ favor with Roberson is the fact that Austin is obviously much closer to home for the Red Oak, TX, native than USC. Proximity to home seems to be a major factor in Roberson’s final decision.

And that is part of the reason why I believe TCU could still be a contender to ultimately sign Roberson next week.

Texas currently has commitments from 24 high school recruits in the 2023 class. All of the high school recruits that are committed to the Longhorns 2023 class are signed. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2023 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 3 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12.
