Texas football found its next wide receivers coach this week, with head coach Steve Sarkisian hiring the former Jacksonville Jaguars first-year wide receivers coach Chris Jackson. Texas will bring Jackson onto the staff to replace the recently-departed wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion.

Marion left Texas to take the offensive coordinator job under new head coach Barry Odom with the UNLV Rebels.

Texas will be getting a much different type of presence at wide receivers coach with Jackson in the fold than it had with Marion. Their backgrounds before taking the Texas WR coach job were very different. And it seems like there will be a difference in personality and approach to a decent degree.

Marion came to Texas as one of the rising stars in the college football coaching landscape. He became well-known for his “Go-Go” offense at William & Mary back in 2019. And it looked like calling plays was an ambition for Marion, which likely led him to take the UNLV job instead of staying at Texas in 2023.

Meanwhile, Jackson had a long professional playing career in the NFL and AFL that lasted throughout the entirety of the 2000s and into the 2010s. After his playing days in professional football came to an end in 2014, Jackson was a private wide receiver trainer/coach for a couple of years. And then, he started his run as an NFL coach when he got his first shot in 2018 as an intern with the Chicago Bears.

Jackson has only coached privately and at the NFL level, so he will obviously be much newer to coaching at the collegiate level than Marion was when he arrived at Texas in early 2022.

That shift in personality and background will certainly have an impact on this wide receiver room. But I’d imagine that the NFL background and success that Jackson found with the Jaguars in 2022 could mean he will have a positive impact on a lot of the wideouts at Texas in 2023.

With that in mind, here’s a look at three Texas wideouts that could directly benefit from the hire of Jackson.
